The Rusalka Scarf
The Rusalka Scarf
Material: Silk Chiffon or Silk Charmeuse. 100% silk. 36in x 36in.
A limited edition silk scarf printed from an original oil painting by contemporary artist Dasha Bough. Featuring an illustration of two Icarian underground dancers. These women are factory workers by day, and performers in the illegal Icarian underworld by night. All forms of art and expression are severely censored in the legal above ground dark Utopia that is Icaria. In reaction to he brutal policies of Icarian state, a dark but colorful underworld has developed; Nizovka. “Rusalka” is a water nymph in Slavic folklore. She is a tragic character who lurks in water and dwells in unfulfilled desires.
The style of the piece pulls from two clashing worlds: the lush, flowing Ballets Russes look of Léon Bakst, mixed with the hard-edged, worker-driven Constructivism of Liubov Popova, Aleksandra Ekster, and Vladimir Tatlin.
Each scarf is a unique work of art that is part of an ongoing film and animation project by Dasha Bough.
